Heron Island Visitor Information

Location

Covering 18 Hectares, Heron Island lies on the Tropic of Capricorn (23 degrees south of the equator), 72 kilometres NE off the coast from Gladstone, central Queensland. 534 kilometres north of Brisbane, and 1,183 kilometres south of Cairns. Heron Island operates 1 hour ahead of Eastern Standard Time (EST) all year round.

Getting There

Regular flights are available from all Australian capital cities to Gladstone (GLT) with Qantas (QF). Gladstone is a 1 hour and 20 minute flight from Brisbane (or a 6 hour drive from Brisbane). Australian residents can check with Travel Online for the best available airfares.

Launch Transfers

Arrival: The launch departs Gladstone Marina at 11.00am daily. Final check-in time is 10.30am if not arriving off a flight at the airport. Flights arriving into Gladstone to meet the launch must arrive no later than 10.00am. The courtesy transfer to the Marina leaves the airport daily at 10.15am, after the arrival of the early morning flights into Gladstone. The coach arrives at the Marina 10-15 minutes later. The launch arrives at Heron island at approximately 1.45pm Heron Island time.

Departure: The launch departs Heron Island at approximately 2.00pm Island time or 1.00pm EST. Arrival time into Gladstone is approximately 3.30pm EST and a courtesy transfer is available for immediate transfer to the airport. Connecting flight must depart from 5pm onwards, if flight departs earlier guests will not make their domestic flight. Bookings can be made through Travel Online. To fully confirm launch transfers, arrival and departure details for Gladstone must be advised.

Note: This service does not operate on Christmas Day.

Car lock up facilities at Gladstone Marina: Security car lock up facilities are available at Gladstone Marina. Please see Voyages staff at the marina on arrival.

Helicopter Transfers

Marine Helicopters: depart Gladstone Airport daily on demand during daylight hours (generally 8.00am - 6.00pm). The flight takes 30 minutes. It is essential that Marine Helicopters are advised of exactly how guests are arriving and departing Gladstone (eg flying, driving, train or staying overnight). If arriving by air, flight numbers must be provided as transfers cannot be confirmed until this information is provided.

Baggage Allowance: Passengers on Marine Helicopter transfers to Heron island may be restricted to one suitcase and one small carry-on item of hand luggage (combined maximum weight - 15kg). Excess Luggage storage available at the airport free of charge.

The Resort Shop and boutique stocks clothing, souvenirs, confectionery, magazines, newspapers, toiletries and voltage adaptors (voltage on Heron is 240V A.C.)

What to bring to Heron Island

Casual resorts wear for daytime and smart casual for after 6.00pm. Also include suitable footwear for beach and island walks.

Tips for travelling to Heron Island

• Check in time is 2.00pm. If you are arriving on a helicopter flight before 2.00pm, we recommend that you carry a 'day bag' with swimming costumes etc. Change rooms and shower facilities are available in the Departure Lounge
• Credit card details will be required on arrival to set up room charge accounts. All major cards accepted.
• Reception Hours 8.30am - 7.00pm
• Complimentary guest laundry and ironing boards (powder can be purchased from the resort shop)
• As Heron Island is a National Park and a prime nesting ground you will expect to see bird dropping and hear birds chirping. Ear plugs are available from reception.
• If scuba diving is on your agenda, please bring along a medical certificate, or if more advanced proof of diving certification is strongly recommended.
